Get Involved!
This page has been established so the members of our church can become active participants in the ways of the church and in our church organizations.. As it is written:
Romans 12: 6 – 8: We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.

The Duties of an Usher
Any person attending St. John’s Lutheran Church over the age of 18 can volunteer to be a Senior Usher. Junior Usher positions are also available for those who are younger and would like to assist the Senior Ushers in distributing worship bulletins prior to the worship service or during the offering collection.
As a Senior Usher you will usher each week of the month you have requested. Two (2) Communion worship services and two (2) non-communion worship services comprise a month, usually. Some of the responsibilities you will be asked to perform will include displaying the hymn numbers, distributing worship bulletins prior to the worship service, assisting those with special needs as they enter the church, providing information to and referring visitors when they arrive in the church, controlling the lighting as needed within the worship service, conducting a count of those present for the worship service, and arranging for the safety and comfort of the congregation once the worship service has started. At the conclusion of the worship service, Ushers turn off lights as appropriate, check the pews for debris, and lock the front and rear doors. Training will be provided in more depth as needed.
You can register your interest to volunteer as an Usher with the church secretary by emailing her at stjohnsgeneva20@gmail.com or by calling the church office at 440-466-2473 during the morning hours.
The Duties of a Weekly Offering Counter
DURING THE WINTER MONTHS OF 2021-22, THE OFFERING PLATE WILL NOT BE PASSED DURING OUR WORSHIP SERVICE. PLEASE PLACE YOUR OFFERING IN THE PLATE AS YOU ENTER OR LEAVE THE CHURCH OR YOU CAN MAIL YOUR OFFERINGS TO ST. JOHN’S LUTHERAN CHURCH, POST OFFICE BOX 500, GENEVA OHIO 44041.
Any person attending St. John’s Lutheran Church over the age of 18 can volunteer to be a weekly offering counter after the worship service. Usually two (2) volunteers will be designated to assist the Financial Captains each week. Financial Captains have a one (1) month term. The Captains and the volunteers will oversee the procedure of accounting for funds using a detailed report on how much money is collected, assuring the collection envelopes are appropriately marked, and the receipt totals balance. The Captains will be responsible for depositing the monies according to the procedures established. Performing this task usually takes 15 to 20 minutes.

The Duties of the Altar Guild
The women at St. John’s ensures that our altar portrays respect for our Lord by keeping the linens clean and pressed, the altar area is maintained, and flowers adorn it for special occasions as well as during Sunday services. An eternal candle is kept lit representing His eternal love to us and candles on the altar are constantly inspected so that they burn brightly representing our burning love to our Savior. At the conclusion of our Maundy Thursday service, women of the Altar Guild strip the altar bare preparing it for the stark realism of what Good Friday brings. The Guild continue traditions set up by our forefathers that include disposing of the communion wine by pouring the unused wine back into the ground. For more information about these traditions, see JoAnn Eckert during church or email the church secretary at stjohnsgeneva20@gmail.com or call 440-466-2473.
To Join a Particular Church Service Organization
Any person attending St. John’s Lutheran Church is welcome to join the following groups who are considered service groups within the church. The following list is subject to change, may have gender or other requirements, and may meet somewhere other than the church building. If you are interested in participating in any of these organizations, please contact the church secretary at stjohnsgeneva20@gmail.com or call the church office at 440-466-2473 during the morning hours.
